HOW TO TEACH A KID ABOUT REAL ESTATE, CODING, CIRCUITRY AND ROBOTICS (A LITTLE PEEK AT OUR HOMESCHOOL LIFE WITH TUZ)
We’ve been nothing but super busy since we got back from our beach wedding. We actually got a bit sick for 2 weeks after all the wedding tours that ended on May 8, and we had to recuperate up until Mother’s Day last month. It’s going to be Father’s Day soon and we’re still trying to get back to our regular routine here at our mini resort, Oslob New Village, our home in Oslob, by having our morning or evening walks again, hikes up the mountain, going to the beach, paddle boarding, biking, and playing badminton (for better physical health); planting bonsais, herbs and trees; doing chores at home, taking care of Tuz, spending time as husband and wife (a.k.a. mini dates with Mahal), taking care of my online work, and homeschooling.
Speaking of homeschooling, we’ve been doing an independent kind. We really have no curriculum that we follow although we’ve been buying books and workbooks that are appropriate for kids his age and beyond. From time to time, I look at online homeschool guides, but mostly, we just really play it by ear and introduce Tuz (our 7 year old son) to so many things.
A few months back, Mahal bought him a coding book for beginners which he read in one sitting, we were so amazed! Then his dad introduced him to a coding for kids site (scratch.mit.edu) where Tuz has been doing cartoon animations. Since then, we’ve included it in his homeschool activities.
Just before we did our beach wedding, we also bought him a toy about circuitry and robotics. He unboxed it recently and tinkered with it and he was able to connect electrical wires to make the robot and siren work! I was so amazed! He even made an analogy about it being like our body’s circulatory system where the battery is like the heart that brings nutrients to all our body parts. I was just in pure awe! I mean looking back at my own 7th year on this planet, I knew so little. But here’s our 7 year old son already doing circuitry, coding, and robotics! Oh my goodness!!! (Do watch the video I’m sharing below.)
Lately, we’ve also included some more educational games for him. We only allow him 2 hours of computer use per day (to help take care of his eyes better) and this already includes watching educational stuff on Youtube (he’s into NAS daily videos recently), BBC Earth stuff, number blocks, and Roblox games like Rainbow Friends, Doors and other games like Poppy Playtime (these are horror games which tells me he really is my son since I love horror and Halloween, hahaha!)
Just recently I introduced him to some games on Mortgage Calculator. What got our interest are the money and coding games. Since our family owns a lot of properties, I thought of introducing him to Real Estate Tycoon. After all, we love playing our boardgames Monopoly and Millionaire’s Game, so the Real Estate Tycoon would somehow make him appreciate the value of having a real estate business which is basically all about buying low-priced real estate properties and selling them at high prices. He got so excited earning so many $$$ in just a short period of time. Ever since before, we always tell him that one way of becoming a billionaire (Yes! Aim high! Haha!) is to start by having a small business and making it grow. Since we own so many properties and we love buying properties too, perhaps, it’s good to introduce him to real estate. Hence, we let him play Real Estate Tycoon on this platform a few minutes every other day. We’ve included it in his 2-hour computer time too.
